DAANCE certified assistants can be authorized by the dentist to delegate certain reversible intraoral dental services, procedures and duties under specified types of supervision as described in SS 2.10.2 of this Part.
The Dental Assisting National Examination, commonly referred to as DAANCE, is a certification exam that is designed for dental assistants. The DAANCE exam is administered by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) and requires an applicant to have a high school diploma or GED certificate, as well as completion of a DAANCE-approved course. In addition, DAANCE-certified dental assistants must also be currently certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Healthcare Provider and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) by an approved agency. DAANCE-certified assistants who are not practicing in the State of Rhode Island may request to be placed on inactive status with the Board.
The DAANCE exam is a two-part 36 hour course consisting of self-study material and a standardized computer-based exam. Upon successfully passing the DAANCE exam, a maxillofacial surgery assistant becomes DAANCE certified. A DAANCE-certified assistant is able to perform surgical assisting tasks, obtain digital intra-oral impressions and alginate impressions, assist a licensed dentist or OMFS in performing sedation or anesthesia services and complete administrative duties including scheduling appointments, office management and sterilization procedures. DAANCE certification is mandatory for all dental anesthesia assistants holding a valid North Dakota Class I Dental Anesthesia Assistant Permit. DAANCE-certified assistants must also have current CPR, BLS and ACLS certifications.
All DAANCE-certified maxillofacial surgery assistants licensed to practice in this state must, on or before the first day of May of each even-numbered year maintain evidence that they have completed at least twenty (20) hours of continuing education courses relevant to their professional practice. These courses must include a minimum of one (1) hour of infection control training based on the CDC guidelines.
A DAANCE-certified auxiliary who holds a valid NMDA permit, may delegate certain non-invasive intraoral dental services, procedures or duties to a dentist or OMFS if the dentist is qualified to perform such activities as defined in R.I. Gen. Laws SS 5-31.1-7.
All DAANCE candidates must provide a copy of current CPR, BLS or ACLS certification in order to receive their study materials and schedule an examination. Students who fail to supply proof of this requirement by the deadline will be required to pay a rescheduling fee in addition to the original registration fee.
To become a DAANCE certified dental assistant, you must complete an approved certification program and pass an examination. The Commission accepts a variety of programs, including the Dental Anesthesia Assistant National Certification Examination, which includes self-study materials and a standardized exam. DAANCE certification is valid for five years.
All DAANCE-certified dental assistants must have current CPR, Basic Life Support (BLS), and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications. In addition, all DAANCE-certified dental assistants must be employed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon or an anesthesiologist with a valid sedation/anesthesia permit issued by the state of Rhode Island.
