Dental Chairside Assistant

A Dental Chairside Assistant Must Be Highly Knowledgable And Versatile

The medical community must continually evolve to be able to meet the growing needs of an expanding number of patients in spite of a dwindling number of physicians. Nurse practitioners fill in the gaps by performing basic examinations and even writing prescriptions. In the field of dentistry, the Dental Chairside Assistant similarly must take on greater responsibility concerning employer support and patient care.

A dental assistant must be a high-energy, versatile individual who is an efficient multi-tasker. The various duties she must perform on any given day will require both intellectual and practical knowledge and skill. She must be able to not only identify instruments and set up trays, but clean the instruments and be responsible for the maintenance and organization of all dental materials.

The work of a Dental Chairside Assistant consists of supporting the dentist not just in the exam room, but in the office as well. She may greet patients, answer phones, and maintain all sorts of records, from charts to appointments. Prior knowledge of computer programs used for administrative purposes is generally preferred and may even be required for employment.

The knowledge a Dental Chairside Assistant must have is extensive. In addition to being able to identify, organize, and maintain dental instruments, she must also be able to identify and understand the function of all the parts of dental anatomy. This is necessary for maintaining patient charts and answering questions patients may have about particular procedures they need to have performed.

Radiology is one of the most important subjects the dental assistant must know. One of the primary methods by which dentists save time and are able to give more exams and perform more procedures for a greater number of patients is by allowing dental assistants to take x-rays. In fact, in most states, radiology certification is required of dental assistants.

Working as a Dental Chairside Assistant is a challenging and rewarding career that requires much training. However, receiving the required education to become a dental assistant is more convenient than ever. One does not necessarily have to attend college in person, but can take courses from an online institute. There are also many books available for independent study.

If one has already acquired knowledge of dental assisting and passed the Dental Assisting National Board exam, obviously she will fare far better in obtaining a dental assistant position. While many dentist offices will hire a dental assistant based on potential, those with previous experience or certification will certainly be considered first.
